Biology trip to Queen Mary University
On Monday 10th July the year 12 Biologists and some lucky year 10 students visited 'Centre of the Cell' at Queen Mary University in Whitechapel. This is an educational centre located within biomedical research facilities.
We were met there by our host for the day, Kanoyin, who is a fourth year medical student at St Barts and one of Enfield County's successful GCSE students from the past. Kanoyin not only escorted us around the facilities but also answered student questions about careers and qualifications in science and medicine.
We were taken to a 'Pod', which is suspended above the laboratory where we saw scientists at work and experienced interactive games exploring cells. We then attended a workshop on 'Ingenious Genes' in one of the university's lecture theatres. Students were encouraged to participate in the workshop and our girls were keen and ready to contribute.
Much of what was covered during this trip directly overlapped with the Biology A level and the new GCSE curriculum and the students enjoyed and benefited from this experience.
